Projects to protect children, young people and women directly benefit 10 thousand people in the region of Vargem Grande Paulista (SP)

Promote community strengthening and access to rights and guarantee protection for children, youth and women in situations of social vulnerability. These are the two main guidelines that guide the work of the Focolari Movement Society (SMF), which directly benefits 10,000 participants in eight educational, cultural and social assistance projects developed by the non-profit organization.

The SMF operates mainly in the city of Vargem Grande Paulista, in Greater São Paulo, and in the quilombola community in the municipality of São Roque, in addition to Ibiúna and Cotia, according to the executive director of the entity, André Prevatto. “We develop actions within our own dynamics, linked to the principles of care and strengthening bonds”, he comments.

According to Prevatto, socio-educational, recreational, sporting, artistic and cultural activities are currently being developed for children and teenagers in two social centers. Projects for youth are also carried out in the field of international volunteering, leadership training and insertion into the labor market.

Projeto Jardim Margarida

Aimed at children and young people in situations of social vulnerability, the Jardim Margarida Project (JM) develops socio-educational, sporting and cultural activities. The project provides for the reduction of risk behaviors through direct assistance to children and adolescents and also through activities that promote the care and monitoring of their families. It offers welcoming spaces for children and teenagers through socio-educational workshops after school hours to develop the capacity to build positive bonds, through methodologies associated with “Education for Peace”.

Projeto Geração de Futuro

The Geração de Futuro project focuses on the situation of young people in the municipality of Vargem Grande Paulista from public secondary schools, who face great difficulty, upon completing the course, in finding opportunities either in higher education or in jobs in the region. In this way, the project offers a life skills course, focused on the communication skills and teamwork of the young people involved. It tries, therefore, to respond to a gap in formal education regarding the integral formation of the subject.

Espalhando Cuidados - Cuidando de quem cuida

The fraying of the social fabric and the “traditional family” concept has created huge gaps in the development and protection of children and adolescents. The project 'Spreading Care – Taking Care of Who Cares' emerged from the need to contribute to the development of women, heads of families, mothers and guardians of preschool-age babies and children (up to 5 years old), in line with strengthening of links.

“Many projects are interested in working with children and adolescents. The school itself plays a central role in its development. But who takes care of who takes care? In this way, our project offers support and care to women, often alone in their 'parenting' exercise as caring figures. The project aims to help increase the income of women in the periphery, as well as combat and mitigate any form of discrimination against women in vulnerable situations”, adds Sergio Previdi.

Voluntariado Educativo

The project “Voluntariado Educativo: Educar-se Educando” is aimed at teenagers and uses a teaching-learning methodology that seeks to generate significant learning through real problems in order to offer concrete solutions. Thus, it seeks to optimize the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that motivate students to engage and engage in solidarity with the social context that surrounds them.

Jovens por um Mundo Unido (EJMU)

The EJMU project is based on fraternal love from which theoretical and practical activities involving spirituality, social work, art, sports and ecology are developed. All in a multicultural context that provides knowledge to build a united world. Young people participate in activities and community experiences, having new knowledge, developing skills and attitudes.

Projeto Milonga

The Milonga Project offers volunteer programs for young people between 21 and 35 years old, who want to carry out a quality intercultural experience in NGOs around the world, for a period of one year. Participate young people committed to carry out the most varied social activities, training and search for personal growth. The program currently covers seven countries in Latin America, namely: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay, Venezuela and Uruguay.

Sementeira de Projetos

Sementeira de Projetos is an incubator of ideas and activities that are being developed with those served by SMF. It is a system created to design and plan activities that have started in a minimal way or are yet to be born, creating the necessary social impact, keeping all your documentation and staff up to date, in addition to joining forces to start them with the proper training. Within this incubator, SMF has two projects: the Morada Project and the “Vem com a gente” Project.

Projeto Morada

The Projeto Morada housing requalification is not an invasion of an external force that arrives, destroys and builds on top of the ruins of bricks and immense efforts already made to reach current housing, but aims to continue to build "life" on those efforts already made. . It is a housing requalification project that aims to build not only houses, but lives.

Projeto “Vem com a gente”

“Come with us” is a social support and monitoring project aimed at young people in situations of social vulnerability, aiming to reduce risky behavior. One of the objectives is to offer emotional support and vocational guidance to these young people, “walking” with them for part of the course of their lives.

Centro Social Quilombo do Carmo

Currently, the SMF maintains a Social Center in Carmo, a rural neighborhood in the city of São Roque (SP), located 25 km from the city center, being considered the furthest away. In August 2000, it was recognized as a Quilombo Remnant Community and Brazilian Cultural Heritage by the Palmares Cultural Foundation. Currently in the neighborhood there are about 220 families and approximately 950 inhabitants.

The evolution process of Bairro do Carmo has gone through several achievements, made possible by the involvement of the community and the committed performance of SMF. Among the advances, the following stand out: the process of construction and reconstruction of houses; electric lighting; installation of drinking water; expansion and reactivation of the public school; implantation of the medical clinic, including dental treatment; and day care.
